Traffic signs are an important tool for properly guiding drivers and keeping busy roads safe. Still, there are so many different kinds, it's hard to tell what some of them are -- especially when you're judging by shape alone. These are some of the different traffic sign shapes and their meanings.
Octagon
Octagons send one of the clearest messages to the driver; they generally mean "stop." The shape itself is meant to be slightly harsh to passing drivers, making them more likely to notice them. Bright red stop signs are always this shape, and the orientation is exclusive to this particular design.
Circles and Crossbucks
The circular and cross-shaped signs also have their own meanings - indicating railroad crossings. The circle (usually yellow) will depict a black crossbuck with two R's on each side. This is to tell the driver that they are approaching an area with railroad tracks. Crossbucks, on the other hand, are white and are placed where cars pass the track.
Equilateral triangle
An upside-down equilateral triangle provides the driver with a direction for concessions in certain situations. Whether it's passing pedestrians or additional traffic, the sign will indicate where it's best to park, giving others the right of way.
rectangle
Another important traffic sign shape and meaning to remember is the rectangle. There are two different types, each with their own unique information to consider. Horizontally oriented rectangular signs often guide drivers in the form of warnings or traffic control instructions. However, the vertical rectangles represent permanent regulatory rules for the road. Speed limit signs are one example.
diamond
Diamonds are used purely for warning signs, whether permanent or temporary, and are most commonly found near and around construction areas. They are usually orange, like stop signs, and are designed to grab the driver's attention immediately.
Pennant (isosceles triangle)
An isosceles triangle or pennant on the side is used to mark areas of the road where drivers are not allowed to pass vehicles ahead. They are typically used in high-traffic areas, with one lane going in either direction.
Pentagon
Like circular intersection signs, pentagons are used to warn drivers about certain areas of the road that are farther away. However, these shapes indicate the presence of the school. They will be used at the start and end of these areas and at any intersections where students cross the road.
